Types of Wool

There are various types of wool available for felting, each with its own unique characteristics. The most popular and one that we stock is Corriedale wool slivers which offers great texture and durability as well as being available in over 50 colours. We also stock Perendale wool which comes in batts.  We make our own mixed fibre carded batts that are popular with not only those who needle felt but wet felt too, they can also be spun. There are also wool tops in plain colours and  mixed fibre blends. Explore the options to find the perfect wool for your projects. If you need help please contact us.

Terms used in felting

Carded batt - Sheets of wool where the fibres go in different directions creating a web of wool.

Carded sliver - Is a rope like structure of carded wool.

Core wool - Core wool is carded and comes in either batts or slivers. It is cheaper than coloured wool so ideal for using as the core for your 3D sculptures.

Tops - Wool tops are where all the fibres run in the same direction, a bit like hair.

Micron - A unit of measurement used to measure the diameter of wool fibres. The coarser the wool the higher the micron.

Vegetable matter (VM) Even though the sheep's fleece is washed and rinsed many times and then put through a carding machine pieces of hay, leaves, seeds etc can still remain. This is perfectly normal and you can just pick them out as you see them.
